Ensuring that your vehicle is equipped with all necessary safety items for small children is essential. This means selecting and correctly installing the proper car seat when travelling with small children. Car seats are the best way to prevent serious injury to children in collisions. By law in Ontario, small children must be seated in the appropriate car seat (depending on age and weight).

Once you have selected the best car seat for your child, you must ensure that it is properly installed in your vehicle. Depending on if you’ve selected a rear-facing or front-facing car seat, installation will differ. Here are some quick tips you need to know for installing both types of seats:

Rear-Facing Car Seat

  • Install away from active air bags
  • Install the base of the car seat at a 45-degree angle
  • Use your body weight to tighten and fasten the seatbelt or strap through the base of the car seat
  • If needed, use a locking clip
  • Use the harness slots to position the straps correctly

Front-Facing Car Seat

  • Install away from active airbags
  • Make sure the vehicle seat is in the upright position
  • Use your body weight to tighten and fasten the seatbelt or strap through the base of the car seat
  • Secure the tether only to the anchor point(s) provided
  • If needed, use a locking clip
  • Use the harness slots to position the straps correctly

To find out more detailed information on car seat installation, check the website of the Ministry of Transportation.

For increased child safety, vehicles and car seats are designed with the LATCH (Lower Anchors and Tethers for Children) system. The LATCH system was designed to ensure that children are properly fastened into the vehicle, and this system proves to provide far more security than seatbelts alone. LATCH anchors and attachments act as the seatbelt for your child while they are in the car seat.

According to Ontario’s Highway Traffic Act, your child is ready to move out of a car seat and into a regular seatbelt only when they meet the following requirements:

  • The child turns 8 years old, or
  • The child weighs 80 lbs, or
  • The child is 145 cm (4 ft, 9 in) tall or more

If your child meets these requirements, they must be able to do all of the following while using a regular vehicle seatbelt:

  • They can sit all the way against the back of the vehicle seat with legs bent comfortably over the edge
  • Maintain an upright position for the entire trip
  • The shoulder belt is flat across the shoulder and chest
  • The lap belt crosses over the hips, not stomach
