Introducing the New 2022 Kia Niro EV

Introducing the New 2022 Kia Niro EV - Mississauga Kia

The Kia Niro EV is a stylish subcompact crossover that brings high-end electric power to this increasingly competitive segment. Originally launched for the 2020 model year, it has been extensively developed and refined in the years since, and the latest release is better than ever. Could this be the EV for you? Read our 2022 Kia Niro EV review to find out.

Dynamic Subcompact SUV Exterior

The Niro doesn't stray too far from the traditional subcompact exterior design, but it does have a considerably more dynamic appearance than most competitors thanks to its wasp-like headlights and lack of a front grille. The aerodynamic curves sweeping back from the hood deliver less wind noise during driving, as well as boosting performance and range, while the chunky rear end allows plenty of room for cargo with a maximum capacity reaching 1,804L.

Engine and Performance

The Niro EV's powertrain is based around a single electric motor which creates a healthy 201 horsepower and 291lb-ft of instant electric torque, passed through a single-gear transmission to front-wheel drive as standard. Considering the Niro's compact size, this is an ample amount of power that's ideal for nimble city driving but also leaves plenty in reserve for smooth highway cruising.

What's more, the 2022 Niro puts in an impressive 0-100km/h acceleration time of just 6.2 seconds, clearly showing the advantages of an all-electric powertrain when it comes to instantly available torque.

Regenerative Braking

The Niro also includes regenerative braking technology which recharges the battery as you brake, increasing range rather than throwing away all the energy expended in getting up to speed. There are four levels of regenerative braking available, ranging from a smooth braking response with the mild recharging ability to aggressive braking that converts as much momentum as possible into charge.

Battery Life and Range

Alongside the braking technology, the Niro's driving range is helped immensely by the 64.0-kWh battery included in every model. It's estimated that a full charge can power the Niro for up to 385km, banishing thoughts of range anxiety for most daily driving situations. But when the charge does get low, either 120V or 240V home stations can be used, with the more powerful option delivering a full battery in around nine hours. For quickly adding range while out on the road, hooking up to a commercial DC fast charger will bring the battery up to 80% in around an hour.

The battery life is extended even further by a pair of features designed specifically with Canadian winters in mind. First, an automatic heating function keeps the battery within its optimal temperature range, guarding against the loss of efficiency which comes with operation in the cold. And second, the excess heat generated from the Niro's electrical systems is diverted into cabin warming, reducing the climate control system's drain on battery charge.

High-End Interior with Plenty of Tech

The Niro EV's interior is a true high point of the model, boasting a generous amount of tech even at the lowest trim level. New for 2022 is a 10.3" infotainment touchscreen included as standard, beefed up from the 8" screen supplied in previous model years.

There's also a 7" digital driver display supplying essential driver information, supplied as standard on every model, along with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto for easy smartphone integration. Voice-activated Navigation is standard, while audiophiles are well catered for with the Harman Kardon sound system with SiriusXM satellite radio compatibility. Dual-zone climate control is included across the range, with an energy-saving option to deactivate the rear-seat system if only the front row seats are occupied. And lastly, for the passenger cabin, higher trims add valuable extras including ventilated front seats, a wireless charging pad, and a powered sunroof.
